Gender Equality

Alright, so, as this is my first real rant, I must warn you that many of my soap-box opinions have a tendancy to stir up a bit of controversy. So before you go and chase me out of town with pitchforks and torches, hear me out, and realize that this is my blog, and therefore my opinion, to which I am perfectly entitled. Read on.
Back in the day women had very few rights, and were seen as below-average in importance to society. They were something of servants to their husbands, and had very little say in their own homes, let alone government or society in general.

In this day and age, there has been a revolution for women's rights, and women everywhere are scampering to prove to the world that they are just as good as (indeed, better than) men. Even within the culture (though not the doctrine) of the LDS church, I often hear men profess that women are "better" than men, and therefore will probably be saved in greater numbers.

Can you see the pendulum swinging? I can.

To all the extremists out there, I say this: men and women are equal. God, the ultimate in all wisdom and understanding is no respecter of persons, and that includes genders. He does not love one more than the other, and makes no discrepancy in His commandments from one gender to the other. From this I draw a conclusion that although men and women may generally have different vices and weakenesses, they are just that: different. Difference does not denote inequality.

For those who are mathmatically minded, let me break it down for you this way: Ten divided by two equals five. Four plus one also equals five. Those are two different equations with the same value. Am I making sense? So are men and women.

My point today is that it seems that women everywhere are fighting so hard to gain a voice and be "just as good" that they are in fact, overcompensating and actually hitting beyond the mark. More and more, women in the media are becoming the dominant figure-- even to the point of putting the men down. My question is, Why does there need to be any dominating figure? Why cannot men and women coexist in an equal (if different) fashion?

Men and women each have certain talents and abilities given to them that are generally not as prevalent in the opposite gender. That does not make one "better" than the other. The idea is for each to contribute what they have, and in turn, receive what they lack. For those of you who are LDS, sound familiar? Oh yeah-- that's God's higher law.

  2. Dani, as far as your rants go, that was pretty mild. I think there are still plenty of ways that women are still disadvantaged and discounted,I do agree that we shouldn't be putting men down in the process of overcoming the discrimination. Putting others down is never a good idea.
