Empty Promises

I know a woman in whose vocabulary the word "three" is missing. She has a two year old little boy, and he is very mischievous. He gets into everything and loves the attention it gets him. He's rambunctious and energetic, and loves pushing his mom's buttons. I think he's adorable, but he could definitely use a little discipline. Whenever he goes to far, his mom starts counting: "ONE!" When he doesn't stop doing whatever he is doing, "TWO!!" After another moment's hopeful hesitation, she gets up and goes after him. It makes me (and probably him too) wonder, what would happen at "three"? Apparently nothing, because she never gets there, so no wonder he feels free to do whatever he pleases.

I know another woman who likes telling stories. She loves to get a reaction out of people, and it seems that her goal in life is to get as many people's eyes to pop as possible. She often tells you she or someone she knows will do something for you, but seldom follows through.

Empty promises. It's sad that more people who can't be described as a man or woman of their word. It's true that sometimes we forget to follow through with something we've said, but never should a person intenionally fail to keep their promises. Whether to small children, to a neighbor or to God Himself, please keep your promises.

  1. I completely agree. I have a few friends who are like the 2nd paragraph of your entry. For me, the phrases "We need to hang out," or "we really need to catch up, so I can see your little girl" have just turned into the thing to say to be polite...but never really mean it. Such a pet peeve of mine.
